A Meritage ( pronounced like heritage ) is a specific type of blended wine, particularly popular in the United States, that is inspired by the Bordeaux style of wine making. The term "Meritage" combines "merit" (referring to the quality of the grapes) and "heritage" (recognizing the tradition of blending in Bordeaux).
Many wineries in california have stepped out of the traditional French Bordeaux blend and added our unique Syrah combined with the traditional Cabernet and Merlot to create their own variation, and it makes a lovely very enjoyable marriage. Producing a full-bodied tannic style with Cabernet adding its structure and body to the wine with all of its unique characteristics, the Merlot has been described as adding a juicy mouthfeel and Syrah adding spicy, fruity overtones. This Meritage combination is decidedly New-World in approach, but the blend has been adopted by various Old-World producers over the past couple of decades.
